De impact van Les Paul op de blues en rock 'n' roll was absoluut gigantisch. Op het gebied van jazz is de Gibson ES-175 het instrument met hetzelfde monumentale effect. Toen de ES-175 debuteerde met een serie van 129 in 1949, stond hij direct naast de ES-150, wat de gitaarkeus was van vernieuwende jazz-gitaristen als Charlie Christian en Eddie Durham. De ES 175 bewees ook een handelbaarder en minder duur alternatief te zijn voor de L-5's dankzij zijn kleinere body en gelamineerde bovenblad.

 Gibson ES335 Dot Reissue Fi… History speaks for itself. The ES-335 is one of the most important guitars of all time. Right from its introduction in 1958 as the world’s first semi-hollowbody electric guitar it has been a mainstay of players eager to balance the gorgeous, round, mellow tones perfect for jazz and blues with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody. Today the Gibson Custom Shop creates exacting duplicates of the ES-335 as it first left the Kalamazoo plant in 1958. That year just 267 were built, but the original vintage 335s grew steadily in popularity, peaking in 1967 thanks largely to Eric Clapton’s high-profile use of a cherry ES-335 in the band Cream.

In de Custom Shop ES-335 Blok Inlay Reissue van nu komen deze originele verfijningen terug, die ten goede komen aan de bespeelbaarheid en de schoonheid van de gitaar. De populariteit van de ES-335 was al verzekerd, en bleef ook groeien, maar toen in 1963 de eerste generatie van de vernieuwde ES-335 uit de fabriek kwam, vertoonde de verkoop weer een flinke steiging. In dat jaar werden de stippen op de toets van de standaard ES-335 uit 1958 vervangen door de blokinleg waaraan het Custom Shop model zijn naam te danken heeft. Ze zorgden voor verbeterde zichtbaarheid in live-speelsituaties, waar het licht vaak verre van ideaal is, en een extra touch van de in het oog springende klasse. De andere verfijning aan de '63 was het gebruik van de toelopende hals met een dunner profiel, gelijk aan de Gibson's die in de jaren '60 gebouwd werden.
