Taylor DDX Doyle Deluxe Doyle Dykes has long favored maple Grand Auditorium acoustic models. In addition to his signature guitar, the DDSM, another namesake guitar, the Doyle Deluxe (DDX), was designed to bring a more affordable signature-style guitar to Doyle-inspired players while still delivering a high level of performance and style. The DDX is a maple laminate Grand Auditorium with a solid Sitka spruce top. Offered in black with a gloss finish, the DDX features Doyle’s Chet Atkins-style fretboard inlays, a stylized signature treatment emblazoned along the headstock, crisp white binding, a 25-1/2-inch scale length (compared to the DDSM’s short-scale 24-7/8 inches), and a narrower 1-11/16-inch neck. Martin OMJM John Mayer Sign… Like its predecessor, the OMJM John Mayer Special Edition features a top of solid Engelmann spruce with specially designed "hybrid" bracing that enhances the rich, full sound. Body appointments are also similar, with a Style 45 rosette featuring a center ring of colorful paua (abalone) shell, bold herringbone around the top, grained ivoroid binding throughout and a traditional OM teardrop polished and beveled tortoiseshell pickguard. To enhance the beauty of the wood, a specially formulated vintage "aging" toner is applied and then the polished nitocellulose gloss lacquer completes the picture.

Martin BC16GTE The BC-16GTE’s exemplary construction was immediately striking unlike cheaper ABGs that can feel boxy and stiff, the Martin felt supple and responsive. The spruce top’s gloss finish protected it against bruises, and a satin finish guarded the tight-grained mahogany sides, back, and neck. The tuners were smoother than a Kenny G record. The Martin’s ear-tickling harmonic complexity extended across its range, and the fingerboard was free of dead spots. The Martin’s deep body felt large but not unwieldy, and the bass played comfortably whether I stood or sat. Like most ABGs, the saddle placement made the neck’s lower reaches feel like a stretch—that low F seemed awfully far away at first, but it didn’t take too long to get my bearings. The larger body gave the BC-16GTE a much bigger bottom than I remembered from the 00C-16GTAE.
